Santeria is among the most misunderstood religions in western culture. the mere mention of it is sure to invite an ignorant comment fro Mathe uninformed. Someone posted it is theatrics. Most religion has theatrics. I grew up baptist and saw theatrics daily.
Although i do not practice Santeria, I don't see it as any sillier than any other religion. Yes, it does combine traditional Yoruba beliefs with Roman Catholicism, but that is only surface. I'm sure if practicing your religion openly meant death to you, you would find a way to hide it too. The slaves in Cuba were forbidden to practice their traditional Yoruba faith so simply pretended to be catholic. After many years, the original intent got lost in the shuffle. However , if you study anything about traditional Yoruba religion and compare it to Santeria, you will see it is mostly the same faith. Some of the rituals seem bizarre OT outsiders, but to an atheist, it is probably no more bizarre than christian rituals.
I respect Santeria because it is admirable that these people found a way to keep their faith alive despite not being allowed to openly practice it. it disgusts me that people have a double standard when it comes to african versus european mythology.
