LaVeyan Satanists do not in fact worship a deity in the literal sense. Instead they utilize the idea of Satan (the Adversary) as a symbol, that of rebellion, free-thinking, passion, etc.
Theistic Satanists do worship Satan as a deity, again oftentimes as a Patron of knowledge, passion, pride, rebellion, etc. Theistic Satanists can be polytheistic and often incorporate divinities from other religions into their personal or communal pantheons.
