Prior to that a reaction to the medieval Roman Catholic Church -- prior to that nothing, because Satan as the Adversary was G-D's adversary in Judaism, not mans. Worship of Satan basically. It can get really technical considering it is highly influenced (Satanists do the opposite of I mean by this) of many things the media does/reports by being anti-"Forgiving God" and instead believing in a Higher Being that condemned the human race to Death in this universe.
