As far as I know, it's based on the pagan concept of Satan (a Prue-cosmic, pantheistic force), and promotes spiritual betterment, either through work on the self, or submission to a higher power(s). I'd like to learn more, though.
Satanism is really feminism. Look at the facts: Alot of Women are feminists and they hate Christmas. Why? Feminists are anti man which means they are anti Christ (because Jesus was a man). They say "we do not want another male figure to look up to or bow to". So they dint like Christmas because it is about the birth of Christ. They have started the whole issue about Christmas trees and how they should be called holiday trees, and how Christmas should be renamed altogether. This goes for Easter too. They think it should be about an Easter bunny and not Jesus. FEMINISTS have started a war on Christmas a traditional holiday that has been the same for centuries all because they are selfish pigs.They also hate Easter and want to change that too for obvious reasons. That is what the war on Christmas and Easter is about, taking the name of Jesus out of the holidays because women are jealous of him. Feminism is the church of satanism because it revolves around being ANTI MAN which is ANTI CHRIST because Jesus was a man. There is no way around to deny this. Whoever denies this fact - are you stupid or something?
It would appear to worship Satan (by the ism). In which case, it would have the history and responsibility of Satan in life enumerated to its followers.
I did some reading and study of it as a result of a conversation with a Satanist on another forum. Enough to know that it's a philosophy that doesn't appeal to me personally, but I can understand how it might appeal to others... and for the most part, it's a more benign philosophy than those religions that say "Convert or kill the unbelievers!!"
Note the use of "philosophy" in there - my understanding of it is that it doesn't recognize an external, independent Deity, so I don't know that it would be classified as a "religion" any more than atheism is classified as one.
I do think that LaVey did himself and his followers a disservice by choosing the name "Satanism", since they don't worship the Christian concept of "Satan". The "Up yours, Christians!" defiance of calling it that has overshadowed the truth about the philosophy, and IMHO caused more harm than necessary for its followers.
But then, from what I understand of LaVey, it was completely in character for him to do it like that.
I've read the satanic bible a couple of times and was surprised when i didn't find anything too objectionable. to me satanism is a religion based on complete and total freedom paired with utter havoc. that to me is just no good though because that means people can wrong each other and get away with it.
i believe in justice and i believe in revenge, but not senseless violence, which was the feeling i got from reading of and researching satanism.
i believe in a god, but I'm not christian- which is to say, i love god but not his fan club. i do not believe the 'holy bible' is true either, nor all these rules about marriage and homosexuality and not going to work on Sunday or what the fuck ever.
i believe in loving whoever you wish to love, being kind to other people and just having fun while you're here. i also believe there is something out there that cares. i believe there is a Satan as well, but i hate him and don't agree with half of what he stands for. that's all.

I actually just read the Satanic Bible recently. It's interesting--LaVey wasn't any kind of eloquent, but his ideas made sense. He came up with a really quite practical and, in its way, meaningful system of belief. Go extreme humanism!
ETA: Luciferianism isn't quite so simple as "devil-worship". It hearkens back to Milton's Lucifer, and is closer to Gnostic thought than anything--they "worship" freedom and the search for knowledge.
Following is a personal opinion -- total b.s. if you will:
On the surface, Satanism is just like any religion with all the props -- scriptures, rituals and mysticism -- If one is mesmerized by that sort of things.
In reality, it is a satire of Christianity. Take all the mambo jumbo of the church, change the name, give it a twist and there is Satanism.
As a religion, there is the appearance as well as the philosophy to back it. What they worship -- or sought after -- are the materialistic and pleasurable aspects of human lives. (In this day and age, who isn't?) If one could see through that, one would see the darker reality of what being a free human is about.
Like anything non-Christian, Satanists are branded with sin -- by the Christians of course, but instead of being ashamed of it. Satanists actually empower themselves with that label. If one could do anything good or bad in the name of love and "God", why not in the name of sin and "Satan"? There is as much truth in it as there is of Christianity. Yet, it is especially effective against their enemies. There is a, "give me your worse and it would be used against you," attitude.
Satanism does not outwardly promote anti-social behaviors, yet, conscience is not the top priority especially when offended. It is a somewhat radical and defensive way of living in the modern society. To put it in other words: If others outwardly make it their business to be offensive, they deserve to be humiliated and completely defeated with no reservation.
Satan means " Adversary " the church of Satan believe it is okay to ask question not blind faith and whatever it take to get what you is okay. that is just a Little of what they believe and on a footnote Paganism is not Satanism with don't believe in a Satan Prue say.

The super amazing philosophy of the Satanic Bible: If it feels good do it- - hardly earth shaking in the late 1960's. LaVey was SOOO successful at his "magic", he had to live on public assistance in the late 1970's! Maybe we ought to mention the Satanic Rituals too.
How "smart" do you have to be to want to:

Or a human leg bone or arm bone is used in Homage to Tchort ritual (Satanic Rituals p.137)
Or see a woman dressed as nun urinates before group into a bedpan in the Black Mass ritual (Satanic Rituals p.43)
and then urine is then sprinkled like holy water (Satanic Rituals p.44)
Or maybe see a man climb into coffin with nude woman (or nude man if he is gay) in Le Epais ritual (Satanic Rituals, p.59).
Sounds pretty nuts, now doesn't it?
I could mention how he and the Church of Satan once ate a human leg that was amputated from a 20 year old girl (Satan Wants You by A. Lyons, Church of Satan, by B. Barton). Or how he even fed it to his kid. Sound smart?
