I think the whole "satanic ritual abuse" thing in the 90's kinda scared a bunch of people off of the idea.

I do not understand the fear of it.

I do not believe the reasoning is due to the lack of conformity - in all actuality, 'worship' of the self is a VERY popular practice today.

Maybe, and sadly, it is simply due to the title, and the popular negative Christian sentiment that goes along with it.

We as people fear what we can not understand and can not comprehend. Some people were born not liking Satanism because of what there parents(and religion) may have taught them. You are also right about people not liking LaVeyan's form of Satanism because it is not mainstream. Many people conform to society and what ever the government, there family, and/or friends do not like they choose not to like it to feel excepted.
