Yes. Lord Xenu, big interplanetary-traveling airplanes, volcano's killing aliens, spirits trapped in our bodies known as "the tans", e-meters and auditors and charging big big big bucks for access to "church secrets"... it's what they believe.

Scientology is undeniably a cult.

Every cult can be defined as a group having all of the following five characteristics:

1. It uses psychological coercion to recruit, indoctrinate and retain its members
2. It forms an elitist totalitarian society.
3. Its founder leader is self-appointed, dogmatic, messianic, not accountable and has charisma.
4. It believes 'the end justifies the means' in order to solicit funds & recruit people.
5. Its wealth does not benefit its members or society.

Are Cults Harmful?

To remain within the strict mental and social confines of a cult for even a short time can have the following disastrous effects:

Loss of choice and free will. Diminished intellectual ability, vocabulary and sense of humor. Reduced use of irony, abstractions and metaphors. Reduced capacity to form flexible and intimate relationships. Poor judgment. Physical deterioration. Malnutrition. Hallucinations, panic, dissociation, guilt, identity diffusion and paranoia. Neurotic, psychotic or suicidal tendencies.

Yeah, south park does their research and makes fun of people really well... they got the Mormons, and that club of people who killed chef.

Absolutely. L. Ron Hubbard was a great science fiction writer. So good he made a whole lot of gullible people believe one of his stories, as preposterous as it sounds to the majority of folks.

Yes and no. The alien Xenu part is quite true. However, it's supposed that not every Scientology's automatically believes in it. In fact, Mr. Xenu is believed to be downplayed, especially in the very beginning. As you reach the different levels, he may be introduced more and more.

Think of it like Christianity. Some people may actually believe in Adam and Eve and the 7-day creation of the world. Some simply accept it as a pretty story but don't really buy it.

It's not until you've donated your life's savings and have reached the ultimate clear level that you're taken out on the mother boat and really and truly indoctrinated.

I researched this a while back - started at pillowed a few links.
