Yes, Scientologists believe that your problems are all related to a past memory or engram that you could have got at birth, while unconcernsCer other traumatic event, or even in a past life (not sure how that works with christianity considering the CofS is meant to be non-denominational). They use semi- trance like states to enduce a euphoric feeling by the end of the session so that you feel like you have had a win, for example one of the courses you might do is simply sitting staring at another person for as much as 2-4 hours until you can do it without moving. They also use the e-meter in most scientology techniques, in a process called auditing. Auditing removes the engrams which are meant to cause all your problems, including physical ones as these are thought to be physcosomatic.
I'm afraid the tools or tech behind scientology don't actually do what they say they do. If Tom would submit to a test (which he won't) to test his levels of dsylexia before and after, then it would show just like the only study done on dianetics, that it does not work. People believe they have improved.... I'm not too fussed if they want to believe that but until it is tested and validated by the scientific and learning communities I don't think they should be promoting that it does this. There is is no scientific support for this.
See here about some of the techniques used:
http://www.clambake.org/archive/techniques/
Here is the only formal study of dianetics that has been allowed:
http://www.clambake.org/archive/fischer/
It found that it does not help...
If scientology is so adamant that it can fix things like this then they should offer their findings to be evaluated and tested by the scientific community. They won't do this however.
