I find it hilarious that Ron Hubbard submitted his work to the field of psychiatry for peer review and they told him it was a bunch of rubbish. Then all of a sudden he is totally against psychiatry. But then this fact is a teaching within Scientology - to destroy utterly the critics of Scientology, much like the catholic church pursued "heretics" to destruction. You see in the fantasy world of religion heretics and SP's (Scientology's definition of someone who is opposed to it) are the same thing and you are witnessing what the birth of Christianity was like by watching Scientology in action today.

getting back to the question, the answer is of course because they are in the same market and therefore business rivals. Scientology speaks about psychiatry being evil. now i dint know the history of it myself and i am not inclined to doubt that there have been some awful incidents. But the ploy to badmouth them and steal the business is see through nonetheless. I am generally with the scientologists (gasp) on this one though. I think that it is an essential quality of any man to be able to resolve your own inner problems without the need for anyones intervention and help. there are some who are beyond self help of course and that requires a different approach, but the bulk of people visiting psychiatrists probably have minor problems and are not on the verge of insanity.

so the simple way to put an answer is that they are business rivals and scientology uses dirty tactics to dismiss them and promote themselves.

They do it because Hubbard told them to.

They are forced to believe everything he wrote, regardless of whether it makes sense or not. They are not allowed to question his teachings.

As for why Hubbard thought it a good idea... Big Sword covered that nicely.

Because Psychiatry is not the same practice as Psychology.
You need to sort this out. Freudian analysis is a branch of psychology.
Scientology does not use Freudian analysis . It uses Dianetics. A different methodology fully covered in the the book Dianetics The Modern Science of Mental Health by L.Ron Hubbard (published in May 1950).

Scientology opposes abuse in the field of mental health. Primarily, these abuses have come from psychiatrists (HTTP:www.psychcrimes.org), with some exposed in psychology as well. Dianetics is not Freudian-like. You'll need to read the book, then you'll see that for yourself. This is a another critic myth.

Although Dianetics and Scientology were founded by L. Ron Hubbard, and all the scriptures are solely comprised of his writings and recorded lectures, he nonetheless wrote:

?Acknowledgment is made to fifty thousand years of thinking men without whose speculations and observations the creation and construction of Dianetics would not have been possible. Credit in particular is due to: Anaxagoras, Thomas Paine, Aristotle, Thomas Jefferson, Socrates, Ren? Descartes, Plato, James Clerk Maxwell, Euclid, Charcot, Lucretius, Herbert Spencer, Roger Bacon, William James, Francis Bacon, Sigmund Freud, Isaac Newton, van Leeuwenhoek, Cmdr Thompson (MC) USN, Voltaire, William A. White, Will Durant, Count Alfred Korzybski and my instructors in atomic and molecular phenomena, mathematics and the humanities at George Washington University and at Princeton.?
