Is it legal to ban a religion in a so-called "Westernized" country, that follows international law and is a part of NATO? Is Scientology banned in any other country?
i just researched it a bit. its not that Scientology is banned, its just not recognized as a religion(because its not) and given tax exempt status. it only achieved that stays in the us because they blackmailed the IRS
There's been movements to ban Scientology in France, where the government does not recognize it as a religion. As stupid as Scientology is, I think it's crossing the line to ban a group of humans from practicing what they believe.
It has not been banned in Germany, but in Germany like in France and several other countries, it is not recognized as an official religion, but that does not mean it is banned. It's still legal in Germany.
As for is it legal to ban a religion in a westernized country that follows international law and is part of NATO ... well that's up to the people within that country as it's their domestic issue. France's largest religion is Catholicism and they have a lot of clout there despite the highly secular nature of the country.
Excuse me for stating the obvious. Scientology is not a religion.
In Germany, official views of Scientology are particularly skeptical.
In Germany it is seen as a totalitarian anti-democratic organization and is under observation by national security organizations due, among other reasons, to suspicion of violating the human rights of its members granted by the German Constitution, including Hubbard's pessimistic views on democracy Vi's-?-vis psychiatry and other such features.
In December 2007, Germany's interior ministers said that they considered the goals of Church of Scientology to be in conflict with the principles of the nation's constitution and would seek to ban the organization. The plans were quickly criticized as ill-advised.
The plans to ban Scientology were finally dropped in November 2008, after preliminary investigations failed to unearth evidence of illegal or unconstitutional activity.
The legal status of the Church of Scientology in Germany is still awaiting resolution; some courts have ruled that it is a business, others have affirmed its religious nature.
The German government has affirmed that it does not consider the Church of Scientology to be a religious community.
It's true that Germany has been trying to ban Scientology for a number of decades.
It's also true that they can't do it as their Constitution forbids discrimination against religion. That's why Scientology has had to fight dozens of court cases over the years where the various government bodies try and get it redefined as a business and not a religion. Then they think they can ban it. But so far the courts have not agreed with the government.
No. It was attempted and the High Courts threw it out. Scientology is just the latest religion in Germany to have this attempted on them. Germany is not known as a religiously tolerant nation. It views any action that gives people faith in a better life as politically dangerous.
"In December 2007, Germany's interior ministers said that they considered the goals of Church of Scientology to be in conflict with the principles of the nation's constitution and would seek to ban the organization"
Here are the aims of Scientology that Germany finds so threatening:
"A civilization without insanity, without criminals and without war, where the able can prosper and honest beings can have rights, and where man is free to rise to greater heights, are the aims of Scientology."
