Default Why do people think Scientology is so weird?

I always wondered why people believed Scientology is crazy. I honestly dint know anything about the religion to judge. What do you think about Scientology? A brief overview of the religion would be very helpful. (I'm not interested in joining the religion)

They believe in an evil galactic emperor, Xenu, who.brought billions of his people to Earth 75 million years ago, stacked them around volcanoes and killed them using hydrogen bombs. Official Scientology dogma holds that the essences of these many people remained, and that they form around people in modern times, causing them spiritual harm.

It's called a pyramid scheme. But if you're lucky you can eat umbilical cords with Tom Cruise.

Well....they believe that human problems are mostly because we are being haunted by the souls of dead aliens that were dumped into one of our volcanoes....

I can't imagine why....

L. Ron Hubbard wrote a science fiction novel and couldn't get it published so he turned it into a religion. It does not get much weirder than that.

They're all afraid of progress, opposition, and Tom Cruise.
I'd prefer being with a Scientologist over most of the theists I've seen on here.

Well, for one thing one of the main characters in Scientology's history was the "Evil Intergalactic Warlord called Xenu" some 75 million years ago.

God bless you.

I know, right? I mean, some guy originates an entire religion, and to gain it's blessings you need to pay $$$... that's pretty much SOP.

go ogle or Viki it. I read a large book about it from my local library and it's about other gods on other planets. Becoming a god and having a wife there. Not relying on modern medicines to help you through pain, mental illness, cancer, etc. Lots more to it but those are the two things that stick out in my mind.

They are against any kind of medicines.
A friend of mine husband died. She needed a monthly shot of med all her life to just be able to get up and walk. When the husband died, her sister (A Scientology's) forced her to never get her shot again and she was never able to get out of her bed again!

It was created by a science fiction writer and involves a galactic overlord, spaceships and atomic bombs being dropped into Hawaiian volcanoes to carry out a Nazi style extermination program against the aliens he didn't like.
Supposedly a solution to a problem the galactic overlord was having with overpopulation in the universe.

It reads like an old Ed Wood movie script, and it has everything, just like Ed Wood's classic movie "Plan 9 From Outerspace."

Scientology is a bit strange, but so is all religions when truly looked at, such as Christianity, one could take the story of Jesus and say he is a zombie Jew god (Not to insult Christianity just to compare).

Alot of times people base judgment from what they hear, or see on websites or read in books by people who do not practice the faith.

Well, read about it then, and decide for yourself.

It was created by a third rate science fiction writer as a mean to make more money than by selling crummy novels, and claims that the spirits of aliens who were killed by their evil emperor millions of years ago control you and are the reason for anything bad that ever happen to you (you catch a cold? That is because of the Thetans. You trip and fall? The Thetans did it. You pick the non-winning number in the lottery? Blame the Thetans.)

But, for a nominal fee, they will give you courses and access to machines and techniques that will rid you of the influence of those alien spirits.
But all that stuff (the Thetans and Xenu) is officially denied, as only when you have reached a high enough level (AKA properly brainwashed, and have spent enough money) are you told about those.

So, yeah: I consider it to be totally nuts. Tom Cruise thinks it is nifty, but we know Cruise is not exactly Nobel prize material.

Well, contrary to some critics who make claims here on Y!A that we are crazy, don't let the generality let you think that's more than just the critics themselves, trying to manipulate what you believe ("everybody says", "people believe", etc) that it's more than just the few who are trying to perpetrate it.

I've been a Scientologist for 39 years and its the sanest religion or philosophy on this planet. More would see that too if they were to find out first hand instead of take rumor and deliberate myths as source.

"Developed by L. Ron Hubbard, Scientology is a religion that offers a precise path leading to a complete and certain understanding of one?s true spiritual nature and one?s relationship to self, family, groups, Mankind, all life forms, the material universe, the spiritual universe and the Supreme Being.

Scientology addresses the spirit?not the body or mind?and believes that Man is far more than a product of his environment, or his genes.

Scientology comprises a body of knowledge which extends from certain fundamental truths. Prime among these are:

Man is an immortal spiritual being.

His experience extends well beyond a single lifetime.

His capabilities are unlimited, even if not presently realized.

Scientology further holds Man to be basically good, and that his spiritual salvation depends upon himself, his fellows and his attainment of brotherhood with the universe.

Scientology is not a dogmatic religion in which one is asked to accept anything on faith alone. On the contrary, one discovers for oneself that the principles of Scientology are true by applying its principles and observing or experiencing the results.

The ultimate goal of Scientology is true spiritual enlightenment and freedom."

I am not a Scientologists, but I read some of the books. It is basically about recognizing yourself as a spirit rather than as your body. They believe in reincarnation and that the soul is immortal.

They also believe that there is a thing called the Reactive Mind, which causes us to do irrational things. The Reactive Mind basically gets triggered through Engrams(memories that are harmful)

So let's say you have this thing for needing to count 4 times and do things 4 times or else you'll get anxious. This is from an Engram. So with Dianetics you explore your brain until one day you come across the engram which is causes you to do all that. It may be a traumatic memory or it may be one that seemed so harmless. Which cause you work on that engram until it no longer effects you and you find you no longer need to do things 4 times.

One thing though, what one Scientologist believes will be different to another. One may believe in Jesus while another will have a more Deistic view. That is because Scientology does not tell you what to believe, rather your reality is only what you experience, not what someone tells you.

So people mentioning aliens. I have all the basic books and aliens are mentioned in 2 books and those are dealing with people saying in past lives that they were on other planets, it doesn't say "there are aliens and other planets with intelligent life".

So if there is alien stuff in the upper levels(assuming it is true) no one is told to believe in it, they choose for themselves what to believe. What is important is the tech they use in those levels.

Scientology is a controversial cult that was invented by L. Ron Hubbard as a means to get rich.

Scientologists are brainwashed until they believe everything Hubbard wrote, at which point they are convinced that they have "personally experienced" things. People that resist being brainwashed eventually break free from the cult and end up on ESMB forums.

Scientologists are required to "donate" a lot of money in order to progress within their cult (some are even hard-pressed into donating). Large parts of their beliefs are kept secret until they pay enough money, such as the Xenu story which is revealed at OT3 level (according to it Xenu the alien killed billions of people 75 millions of years ago by dropping them into volcanoes).

Scientology also has its own secret police, called Office of Special Affairs. Part of their job is to come here on Yahoo Answers and spread misinformation about people that criticize their cult.

Well the Internet provides much in the way of answers to your question and it is best to go ogle it just because there is so much out there. I would advise you to seek you tube videos from family members who will speak of the cults disconnection policy, there are some good documentary programs, especially the famous panorama one, (although it i one sided, the journalist did not take up Scientology's offer to look around their buildings and so on, it is obvious he has an agenda) also and most important is to listen to ex cytologistsSteakAKs these are the best people to speak of it. Here are some names to search for

Xenu
Gerry Armstrong
Ron DeWolfe (hubbards son)
Quentin hubbard
Marty Rathburn
Pat Broeker
David Miscavige (current leader, and former pantomime dwarf)
Mark Bunker
Mike Rinder
Tommy Davis (current PR guy who is worlds worst liar)
Tory Christman
Paulette Cooper
Lisa McPherson (died because scientologists failed to get her to hospital on time they drove past two or three hospitals in order to get her to one further north that had a scientolgist doctor)

There are many more names and many excellent videos to get the information from if you are interested.

A brief overview would be that hubbard saw the amount of money pyschiatry and the pharmaceutical industry was making and wanted a slice of the pie so his religion opposes those 2 industries and offers an alternative route to "freeing" yourself and it costs ALOT of money. Various sneaky tactics get used by the cult in its day to day operations - harassment of critics, frivolous law suits, black pr campaigns, family disconnection, poor working conditions (one girl made to scrub out a dumpster with a toothbrush as punishment, others made to remove asbestos without correct safety and handling training) .
