Default Books/Papers on Scientology?

I'm looking for scholarly/academic books about the 20Th century religion/cult (I could care less which you prefer unless you've actually written a paper/book) Scientology. I am NOT looking for books by Hubbard himself, as these are well-publicized and easy to find. I am also not looking for Church documents that have leaked, such as KSW, since these are also very easy to find. I'm mainly interested in highly-disciplined, academic investigations into Scientology that might, say, compare the organization's activities and dogma to those of the medieval papacy in the 15Th and 14Th C.E. I'm not as interested in books or papers by former church members (most of whom, I'm guessing, take an understandably non-scholarly angle in their analysis), though I intend to delve into those writings as well, and would appreciate anything which you consider to be vital.

If you're currently involved in the official C of S, don't reply/harass me. If you're involved in a Sociology or Cultural Studies department in an accredited university, PLEASE throw me an analyst's name or title, even if you have better things to do.

Thanks!

They seem to have identical tactics in some of their activities.

Here, look at the left for "IN THIS ISSUE."

Directly beneath it you'll see "Lawrence Wright on Scientology."

It's a twenty-six page interview with Paul Haggis, called "The Apostate."

It's a fascinating analysis of what goes on... "vital" information ...when a person reaches "all the way to the top" in Scientology, as Haggis did before he resigned.

I understand you don't want "tirades" by 'former church members' and think this long article isn't that. I think it could help, since I do consider it "vital."

In all honesty I am cannot help you with a book or paper, but I have a suggestion that if you cannot find anything that you look in depth at tactics used by the catholic church in its history to establish itself so firmly into our current culture and research the easy to find critics information and use these as leads you will see how $Scientology has actually used pretty much the same tactics to establish itself. One simple example would be Scientology's recent development of "Ideal Orgs", posh buildings when compared to the lackluster little shop fronts many current or gs use to sell their books. The catholic church did the same thing with their cathedrals, massively expensive and massively awe inspiring to just look at and undoubtedly would have had a massive draw in their day. I dint think the current strategy of Scientology having fancy buildings will make any difference though, people are too intelligent and can see through their BS too easily. Here is a snippet from a Hubbard bulletin in case your interested....

they were engaged in litigation with the FDA. Hubbard began issuing policies to members such as in Hubbard Communication Policy Letter of 12 February 1969:

"All Orgs are now Churches; Stationary is to reflect fact that or gs are churches; All public literature must state that Scn is religious." It also states, "This may or may not be publically acceptable. This is NOT the point. It is a requisite defense."

Hubbard Organization Executive Course,
(1969 version) Volume 6, Page 119"

Good luck with the study, definately interesting stuff and I m sure you will be able to draw many comparisons.(heritics = "SP's" etc)

Have you tried going to JSTOR.org -- one of the biggest databases of scholarly papers and journals? Search any keyword you want, Scientology, Dianetics, etc., and there's bound to be papers written in your field of interest. (I know, I've searched myself). You may need to be a member of an academic institution to gain access.
