Hubbard was widely believed to be a total con artist, and many of the claims he has made about his own accomplishments have been pr oven as fabrication. Decorated war hero of WWII for example.

He amassed quite a fortune with his cult-like religion Scientology, and there are many well known followers. Tom Cruise most notably.
