I am pretty sure it's pretty much sole a Japanese thing. It's rather ancient, ancestor worship.

I'm not as interested in eastern religion as I am western so I can't recall at the moment.\

The Princess is correct. Shinto is a nationalistic religion practiced virtually solely in Japan. It's animistic and does involve honoring ancestors. It isn't formal, so each village has it's own version. Many Japanese practice it alongside Buddhism; Buddhism is used for life issues, Shinto is observed for the afterlife.
