Shinto is about living in harmony with nature and society. There aren't any commandments so you attend the rituals (or not) because you want to. There is no particular problem with not attending them. Because Shinto has no concept of original sin, the priests don't give sermons to tell you how bad you are and how you'd better give them more money to ease the guilt. Unlike many religions, Shinto does not focus on death, rather it focuses on life affirmation so Shinto rituals tend to be fun rather than tedious. Because the Shinto Shrines are only loosely related, there is a wide variety of ritual styles.
A note on gramme: Practitioners of Shinto are Shintoists. "Shintos" is not even a word.
