Shinto was the state religion of Japan until just a few years ago.
It has many many followers still today.

As for the movie. I dunno, never seen it.

But Christians should ask themselves, what if Shinto is the true religion? Maybe they better convert.

There are a lot of shrines and gods/deities in the film, which relates to its setting [shrines in the beginning] and characters [gods].

There are a lot of Shinto themes in all of Miyazaki's movies, but Spirited Away is the one most religion and film students think of in that context. Here's a pretty good article from the Journal of Religion and Film just on Spirited Away and Shintoism.
