Shinto is one of the largest and oldest religions in Japan. Shinto is the indigenous beliefs and rituals of Japan. Shinto like many other religions has gods or deities. The Shinto gods or deities are referred to as Jami. They are sacred spirits, which take the form of things and concepts important to life, such as wind, rain, mountains, trees, rivers and fertility. The Sun Goddess Amaterasu is considered Shinto's most important Jami. She is the ancestress of the Imperial Family and is regarded as the chief deity. Spirits like Amaterasu are worshiped in shrines, which are called Shinto shrines. These are also said to be the homes of the spirits. Festivals are regularly held in order to show the Jami the outside world. Shinto also teaches of a divine couple, Izanagi-no-mikado and Izanami-no-mikado. These deities are thought to have given birth to the Japanese islands and their children became the deities of the various Japanese clans. Followers of Shinto also believe in ?Four Affirmations?. The first affirmation is tradition and family.Family is seen as the main mechanism by which traditions are preserved. The second affirmation is love of nature. Nature is sacred; to be in contact with nature is to be close to the Gods. Natural objects are worshiped as sacred spirits. The third affirmation is physical cleanliness . Followers of Shinto take baths, wash their hands, and rinse out their mouths often. The last affirmation Matsuri, this is the worship and honor given to the Kami and ancestral spirits. I'm not Japanese and I do not practice Shinto. I took an eastern Civ class last semester and I wrote my final research paper on several eastern religions including Shinto. There is much more to Shinto than what I provided. If you need more info just do a search on go ogle or some other search engine.
