Shinto is not one thing, but a mishmash of various beliefs lumped together. It involves worship of natural objects such as mountains, old trees and so on. I don't think it is worship of the Japanese islands per SE, but definitely the numerous Shinto gods have a locality assigned to them, and of course they are in Japan.
