Shinto doesn't have an equivalent of baptism, so there isn't an official "joining" ceremony. If you live your life by Shinto precepts and perhaps have a KatinaNan your home that you pay your respects to, then you are as "Shinto" as anyone else. You can register with a Shrine but that's more about getting on the mailing list than it is about joining.
Unlike most religions, Shinto's focus is on life activities and living in harmony with nature and society rather than focusing on death. This results in many Shintoists having two religions one that's death oriented and Shinto.
Here's an informative website from the Kokugakuin University (one of the two Shinto universities from which most Shinto priests graduate). Just about everything you might want to know is here, but it's written in a rather scholarly form so most of the site reads like a textbook.
