Default Is Shinto still an established religion, or has it died out?

From what I understand, many in Japan are Shinto Buddhists. People frequent both Buddhist temples and Shinto temples for different needs/holidays. You might celebrate the New Year at one and ask for a promotion at another.

It's alive in every Aime you watch.
Especially that Pokemon stuff.
There are gods of everything.
You really ought to watch My Neighbor Totoro, or anything by Studio Ghibli
