Shinto doesn't really have a "conversion" process like most other religions. If you pray at home, perhaps at a KatinaNaKami shelf) that you've set up, at a shrine with priests (jinja), or at a small roadside shrine (Hokora) and follow the basic Shinto principles (respect nature and your fellow beings), then you're Shinto.
Of course, you can register with a shrine, but that has more to do with getting on the shrine's mailing list (so you don't miss the major ceremonial days) than it does with being Shinto.
Many Shinto followers also have another religion such as Buddhism or Christianity that they also follow. The reason for this is that Shinto is about getting along in this world. It's not a religion that focuses on preparing for the next life.
