Shinto is ancestor worship and animism. They worship spirits of nature, so they are (supposedly) deeply in tune with the environment.

Shinto believe that the environment has spirits.
For example their is a tree spirit, and lake spirit.
The spirits are like gods. They prey to them.

Shinto holds that everything has a spirit, including the different aspects of the environment.. For a deeper understanding for western audiences, I recommend watching Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away. It shows the.. effect humans, pollution and development have on the Jami, and the well being of nature.
