Default Can a white person practice Shinto?

I've looked everywhere for a religion that fits me best. Shinto, sometimes considered a religion, sometimes a way of life, fits me from what I can see. Most of my friends feel that from the beliefs I describe, I should follow the Shinto path.

Of course, I don't know if I would be allowed to practice it. According to one friend, I can, but it might be tough with the elders, but not so much with the younger generation.

Is Shinto something I can practice?

I can see absolutely no reason why this would be impossible for you. I don't know whether you've read Motohisa Yamakage's book "Essence of Shinto," but perhaps you should if at all possible. Grand Master Yamakage is the 79Th Grand Master of Yamakage Shinto, and so he knows whereof he speaks.

In his book, he talks about one of his European students, Paul DE Leeuw, who went to Japan to practice Shinto in 1979. Yamagake says, "After several years I granted him license to perform Shinto ceremonies and he became the first mannish, or Shinto master, in Europe..... His pioneering work has convinced me (Yamakage) of the rightness of my original idea that Shinto cannot be propagated, but should be rediscovered in each country as its spiritual heart" p. 203. The point is that Shinto is not a "faith tradition that can be propagate or imposed." If DE Leeuw (and many others) outside Japan can do it, so can you through your own creativity, study and devotion to Kami. Sincerity and persistence counts for a lot. In so far as being accepted by the elders, do you mean Shinto priests? Do you live in an area that practices Shinto? If so, seek out an acceptable local shrine and a willing and understanding priest. Even if such things are not available to you, you should do what your heart leads you to do. You could practice Shinto on the moon, if you had an inclination and the wherewithal. Good luck - and keep reading about Shinto - and pray to Kami for assistance.
