I thought Shinto was a religion of its own. There are many different types of Buddhism practices, the two main ones are Theravada Buddhism and Mahayana Buddhism. Zen Buddhists rely heavily on meditations and clearing their distracting thoughts by contemplating seemingly unanswerable questions.

Shinto and Buddhism are actually different religions. Zen Buddhism is a type of Buddhism. So you could be Shinto and a Zen Buddhist.

Shinto is the indigenous religion of Japan - but most people don't call themselves "Shinto" - to them it's just what they were taught when they were little and aren't aware it's a religion. Many of them don't know the word "Shinto." However, most Japanese believe in Buddhism AND Shinto. In certain times in history, Japanese emperors have outlawed combining the two religions, but many shrines/temples are both Shinto and Buddhist.
