Shinto is derived from tradition similar to Buddhist belief but its philosophy is applicable more to the Japanese culture and religious tradition.
You may observe how Japanese are able to mix the Old Traditional belief and their advanced scientific knowledge.
Shinto is a Japanese religion. Shinto means "way of the gods". So it is a religion. Its the oldest religion in Japan. I believe it dates back to ancient Japan, but I'm not 100% sure on that.
