Shinto is characterized by polytheism and animism, a strong focus on ritual purity, and involves honoring and celebrating the existence of Kami, Japanese word for the spirits within objects in the Shinto faith

If I remember right its a religion, I've actually studied a little about Shinto but I have forgotten most of it, there is something about a giant fish causing earthquakes if that tells you anything.

It's more of a cultural thing in Japan. It's there, but it's part of being Japanese, not religious.

It's a religion - one of its major points is worship of the Jami.

Shinto is derived from tradition similar to Buddhist belief but its philosophy is applicable more to the Japanese culture and religious tradition.
You may observe how Japanese are able to mix the Old Traditional belief and their advanced scientific knowledge.

Shinto is a Japanese religion. Shinto means "way of the gods". So it is a religion. Its the oldest religion in Japan. I believe it dates back to ancient Japan, but I'm not 100% sure on that.

And there is philosophy in every religion.

Hope I helped.
