Good question. There's no real holy book, save for the Nihon Shoki and Koujiki, which double as historical and mythological texts about Japan. Try looking at some of the websites below to get started.
Shinto itself is a fairly free form religion: it's animist, which believes that spirit resides in all things including people, rocks, waterfalls, trees, and animals. It's merged with Ainu culture at least once, and took elements from Mahayana Buddhist traditions, and is fairly incorporated into Western culture due to the modernization of Japan.
