It was replaced with Hinduism, and then eventually other religions found their way there. Do a web search on Buddhism and it will explain it.

i disagree with opinion that Buddhism is not practiced in India;budhism is absorbed into mainstream Hindu religion when it went to decline following destruction of Noland and taxi la universities by invading Muslims as well as defeat of Buddhist scholars to medic scholars in debate or local kingdoms favor.ask Hindu in India today, they have no problem worshiping in buddhist temples.it is simply "absorbed" following destruction of buddhist teaching centres in india

There are so many sects, cults, religions, philosophies, and
movements in the world, all of which claim to be the right way or the only true path of God How can one determine which one is correct or whether, in fact, all are correct? One method by which the answer can be found is to clear away the superficial differences in the teachings of the various claimants to the ultimate truth, and identifies the central object of worship upon which they call, directly or indirectly.
False religions all have in common one basic concept with regard to God they either claim that all men are gods, or that specific men were God, or that nature is God, or that God is a figment of man?s imagination.
Thus, it may be stated that the basic message of false religion is that God may be worshiped in the form of His creation. False religions invite man to the worship of creation by calling the creation or some aspect of it God. For example, prophet Jesus invited his followers to worship God,
but those who claim to be Jesus? followers today call people to worship Jesus, claiming that he was God.
Buddha was a reformer who introduced a number of monastic
principles in the religion of India. He did not claim to be God, nor did he suggest to his followers that he be an object of worship. Yet today most Buddhists who are to be found outside of India have taken him to be God and they prostrate themselves to idols made in their perception of his likeness.
By using the principle of identifying the object of worship, we can easily detect false religions and the contrived nature of their origin. As God said in the Qur?an:
" That which you worship besides Him are only names and you and your forefathers have invented for which Allah has sent down no authority: the command belongs only to Allah He has command that you worship Him; that is the right religion, but most men do not understand.? (Our?an 12:40)
It may be argued that all religions teach good things, so why should it matter which one we follow? The reply is that all false religions teach the greatest evil the worship of creation. Creation-worship is the greatest sin that man can commit because it contradicts the very purpose of his creation. Man was created to worship God alone as Allah has explicitly
stated in the Qur?an:
"I have only created Finns and men, that they may worship Ma?
(Qur?an 51:56)
Consequently , the worship of creation, which is the essence of idolatry is the only unforgivable sin. One who dies in this state of idolatry, has sealed his fate in the next life. This is not an opinion, bit a revealed fact stated by God in his final revelation to man:
"Verily Allah will not forgive the joining of partners with Him,
but He may forgive (sins) less than that for whomsoever He wishes.?
(Qur?an 4:48 and 116)

Wow. These answers are very funny.

To say that Hinduism came from Buddhism is like saying Judaism comes from Christianity. In other words, completely backwards. Hinduism is the world oldest continuously practiced religion, with origins traced back to 5500-2600 BCE. Buddhism has been around since about 500 BCE.

Buddhism lost influence in India starting in 400 CE, from a combination of rejuvenated Hinduism and various geopolitical upheavals in which Buddhist royal patrons were on the losing end. Most people went back to Hinduism; however, Buddhism was still practiced by a small number of people in a portion of Northern India well into the 19Th century. In the 1890s, Buddhism experienced a revival that it's still enjoying today, helped by the Indian government granting exile to the Dalai Lama and other Tibetans. I've read reports that there are about 10 mil Buddhists in India today. Only 1% of the population, but an amazing amount after centuries of being all but dead in the nation. Indications are that is growing quickly in the country, especially among the middle classes.

Buddhism is the most advance philosophical system in the world, it can actually help evolve human beings into next evolutionary steps unimaginable by mere common human minds; as such it became the religious choice of the intelligentsia of the world.

Once you understand it, and if you are willing to spend time to understand it and practice it, then the powers you can developed are unimaginable by even Gods themselves.

A mere common human mind obviously can not comprehend the greatness and unimaginable fortune that they can even hear the base theories of Buddhism, because they think the teaching is from a mere human being, Siddhartha Gautama.

Not knowing that the teachings are actually come from a group of super beings on the other side, who have tried to elevate our human into a higher levels of consciousness, and Siddhartha Gautama- also known as Shakyamuni Buddha was their messenger; as oppose to a God or Gods based religions- who kept humans as their pets and servants to worship them.

Once a person took the journey of studying Buddhism, and has a little intelligence, then he will gain a lot insights and powers to understand and manipulate his environments. With powers of understanding the truth; he will at once see through the power plays and motivation of the leaders of people, and be able to stay objective.

As leaders of Religious orders are jealous of the powers and understanding of Buddhism, with self-interest of survivals, they have stirred up the anti-Buddhism movement.

About the same time a more violent religion, from the Barbaric states of Middle East, begun their advance into India; unable to convert neither Buddhists and Brahmins, they resolved to kill and plunder the Buddhists, a smaller group of practitioners, who by Buddha peaceful teaching refused to fight back with deadly forces. Moslems had killed, along with followers of Brahmanism- who saw an opportunities to get radded of their most fierce competitor, had exterminated all Buddhists from India.

Immediately following the destruction of Buddhism, the Brahmanism in term was destroyed as well. After the Brahmanism was destroyed, it remain as local believes and was no longer an organized religion; until after the British took colony of India, and with the rise of nationalism the Brahmanism was revived as Hinduism),

Fortunately many Buddhist teachers with missions foresaw the destruction of Buddhism in India, and began their journeys to East, and South East and other parts of the world, so the Buddhism exists today.

You might be interested in the talk entitled "The Resurgence of Buddhism in India in the Last 50 Years" (link below)

Also read about Dr. Ambedkar, who brought about a resurgence of Buddhism.

Doesn't exactly answer your question, but I hoped it would be of interest.

It's because of the people in India modifying original Buddhism with other cult practice and turning it into Hinduism.

In the section ?Buddhist Qigong and Buddhism? in the Zhuan Falun Lecture on the web,, you can find out a concise discussion about Buddhism in India.

Not relating to Buddhism, Falun Gong is a unique Buddhist Schools. Falun Gong is based upon the universal principles of Truthfulness, Compassion, and Tolerance. Falun Gong consists of five sets of powerful exercises. Falun Gong, Tibetan Buddhists, and other Christians have been persecuted in China. The most offensive human right violation is the organ harvesting from the Falun Gong practitioners in China.
