No. It is a different religion. Although there is significant overlap with Hinduism.

The Sikhs want their own country and of course India won't allow this Independence so far. I think they still have a cast system in India and the Sikhs were at the bottom of the barrel IDK?

Earlier Hindu moms made their first son as Sikh. Today if some Sikh gets a shave and haircut, I think it is difficult to tell the diff between him and a Punjabi Hindu

So dont call us hindu's or muslims.. Bt our sikh religion does show love and respect 4 all religions ... I really feel the fake steel boy is trying 2 stir up trouble... If ur a "sikh" u can call urself a hindu bt no other sikh wants 2

No Sikhism is not a sect of Hindus but a true religion. It is path shown to us by Gurus. Sikhs do not follow Vedas, similarities, Purans, Koran, Upanishads, Gerta, Ramayana but their own Guru Granth Sahib.
They have Gurudwaras not Mandie
They do not have any respect for Brahmans
Both these religions are here for centuries and will remain here. In past Hindus and Sikhs were close. Hindu upper class was always hostile to Sikhs but that did not affect their relations. It started after invent of the Arya Samaj sect. Daya Nand criticized Guru Nanak, Guru Gobind Singh, Kabir and gave sarcastic remarks on Darbar Sahib and Guru Granth. Sikhs reacted and he told them that he did not know Gurmukhi and will correct these in the new versions. Second edition came after his death and references were not corrected. Arya Samaj got divided on this issue in Punjab between Hard-liner and moderate. Guru Dutt leader of hard liners issued a statement," Guru Gobind Singh was not equal to one tenth of Maharishi Daya Nand". After independence, Hindu India got Punjab, Haryana, Himachel, Kashmir because of Sikhs but they started treating Sikhs like enemies. Every Sikh demand was met with harsh opposition from Hindus even demands like banning tobacco products and declaring Punjab a Punjabi speaking area was met with severe opposition.
Hindus started propagation against Sikhism in the way that it could be equated with worst kind of racism on earth. Some examples:
1. Sikhs are often disrespected by saying Barah Vajjey. Barah Vajjey was a proud event in Sikh history but they use to declare Sikhs as fools.
2. Sikhs are known for drinking. The comments like these are often heard from Sikh haters. As if Hindus, Muslims and rest of the religions do not drink. Sikhs are only 2% in India but alcohol is present in nearly all households of India. This is a two fold attack firstly to defame Sikhs and secondly to promote alcohol in young Sikhs. I often hear this, ? What type of Sirdar are you, you do not drink??.
3. Sardar jee jokes are especially target Sikhs. They find some jokers in Hindi movies and depict them doing all type of bad things. Only a few movies show good character of Sikhs.

But these things did not deter Sikhs in fighting for India in wars and providing huge food in the India' s food market. God is their protector. Hindu religion will be modified in future. No one will believe in Hindu's stories of becoming pregnant just after looking towards sun or a fish after swallowing semen becomes pregnant or vishnoo rides over a bird or Ganesha loves riding on rat or Shiva's blessing can be obtained by becoming aghori and eating anything including filth and human flesh.

Im a Sikh - I can only say that some frustrated Sikhs attack Hinduism because of politics - Read an earlier answer

http://in.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Ag468zwjxDNeIrLJP2vagQ.RHQx.;_ylv=3?qid =20100322083352AAqfvgC&show=7#profile-info-4DUsClwHaa

But to come back to your question - To understand Sikhism you have to understand Hinduism. Hinduism is not Christianity and Islam which are codified religions, and have a book and a prophet. Hinduism has originated from various rituals tribal customs and social life over the centuries. Hinduism has 1000?s of Gods and Goddesses and various diverse thoughts.

Predominant amongst these thoughts is a way of life called Sanatan Dharma which more than 60% of the Hindus follow, and this is generally mistaken as Hinduism, and the other thoughts are treated as offshoots of Hinduism. The real truth is that Hinduism means Sanatan Dharma AND all the other thoughts. Sikhism is but one of these thoughts.

Firstly, the British with their policy of divide and rule, and secondly, political turmoil and hatred between Hindus and Sikhs has put the idea of a separate identity in the mind of us Sikhs. Many of my co-coreligionists will say ? but we have different ideas as compared to Hinduism. Sure - I agree that we are different in ways but there are 50 ? 100 major different thoughts within Hinduism and we are BUT one of them. This paragraph answers your questions - all the Dharmic thoughts are different from each other in one or two unique ways.

Do you understand ? Whereas fundamentalist Sikhs we say that we are 1 amongst 7 great world religions the fact is that there are actually 4 great religions. One - Christianity has various branches - Catholic, Protestant, Methodist, Adventist, etc. Second ? Islam has various branches - Shia, Sunni, Ahmediya etc. There is Judaism and finally Hinduism ( which is a collection of various beautiful thoughts like Buddhism, Sanatana Dharma, Sikhism, Jainism, Arya Samajists, Vaishnav, Shaivaites Manbhum, Santhal etc )

So Sikhism is born out of Hinduism. Guru Nanak was born a Hindu, he was a traveling holy man who followed a custom of Sant Mat ( or Saint Tradition ) quite popular amongst saints those days. It was a thought he inculcated in his believers and told them to learn it. His believers were called Sikhs as Sikh means ? ?to learn? We had 9 more Gurus. Yes Guru Nanak also took some minor feedback from Islam but that is the nature of Hinduism ? to absorb from everyone.
