Mallory, you could have go ogled it, there are thousands of sites available. Any way here is my answer.
Word Sikh means a student or disciple or seeker of Truth. In the initial message which is enshrined in Guru Granth Sahib also known as Sikh Scriptures it is written as God is one and forever, Eternal Truth (He or his denotes here a person not any specific gender). He is the creator, fearless, has no enmity, does not die or takes birth and is realized by the Guru's Grace. He has endless virtues and his creations, which include holy persons, are also limitless. Sikhs respect their Ten Gurus and Guru Granth Sahib as Guru Nanak. Guru for Sikhs can be explained as husband of a faithful wife and no one else can equate with him for her. Guru dispels all kinds of darkness of ignorance and is always with the faithful.
When Guru Nanak started his mission by Divine directions. Guru Nanak went to the places of Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists, yogis and Jainism and told them true worship of God and true Mantras for life. He boldly told them that religion was not the name of any ritualism instead practice. Sikhism uses music as tool to propagate God's Word. Guru Nanak used this tool to convert very hard-core criminals like Sajjan, the Thug; Kauda, the man-eater; Malik Bhago the criminal capitalist; Bhumia thief etc. Sikhism ridicules concept of Halal meat and fasting. A thing will not become Halal by performing certain rituals, it will remain Haram. Sikhs do not have any fasting. There are three basic principles: Meditate upon Him, Earning by Honest work and Sharing with the needy.
Guru Nanak's wording regarding women is also special," Born of woman, nourished by woman, wedded to woman, why do they revile woman? Love is born in the heart of woman; And the woman starts life aging and the race! Why revile her that gives birth to kings amongst men. The beauty is born of woman; there is no beauty without woman! None can be without a woman but Him! . System of veil is forbidden in Sikhs. System of Sati is condemned.
There are no infidels or kafirs in Sikhism. Sikhism is a religion for the universal brotherhood. In the Holy Guru Granth Sahib, hymns of Hindus and Muslims and people who were considered as untouchables were included. Sikhs are not chosen people and in His home everyone is judged by one's own deeds not by religions. Guru only supports those who are following right path. No one will go to heaven by converting to certain religion. Guru Nanak says in Jap (u) ji, " He who does not discriminate is the topmost religious person". Guru Nanak in his other versions said loudly, "Nanak is with low among the lowest?.
There is no priest class in Sikhism. Guru Nanak used very strong words against Hindu, Muslim and Yogi priests of that time.
There is no real concept of heaven or hell after death. By good deeds, which include love for God and his creations, one can come close to God and enjoy salvation in present life.
