The concept of Khalistan gained currency in early 80s when certain Sikhs (With support from who else? but India's sick neighbor) were made to believe that the Indian state is going to destroy their faith and religious practices.

This coupled with certain political blunders from Indian leadership made Sikhs jittery and they were convinced that arms and adamant attitude, could gain them a separate homeland (Khalistan).

This ultimately lead to tragic incidents like Operation Blue star and assassination of Indira Gandhi.

But ultimately with certain deft political manoeuvrings and bold decisions along with truly holistic approach to genuine grudges of Sikhs, the situation calmed down and people themselves realized that they had been made a pawn in the game of two neighboring counties which ultimately brought this tragic face of great Sikh history to end. (Of course as traces of poison always remain, however hard you try to wipe it)
