Default What is the significance of the Gurus in Sikhism?

What is the significance of the Gurus in Sikhism? And why has there been no living Guru since the death of Guru Gobind Singh in 1708?

The Gurus are to Sikhism what Jesus is to Christianity and Mohammed is to Islam (IE. the prophets).

Guru Gobind Singh left behind the Sikh Holy Book, the Guru Granth Sahib, to carry on the word of the gurus...

Well dear ask er the glory of Gurus can not be defined in words, They are the founder of Sikh path to reach/realize the creator of the universe, the supreme Lord God, and even there is no difference between true Guru and Lord God Himself.
S's S's S's S's S's S'sS's S's ?
I have sought all the enjoyments but none is as great as the enjoyment of God.
S's S's ?? ???? ??? ?????? ??? ???
Through Guru's pleasures, He, the True Lord, is obtained.
??????? ??? ???? ?? ?? ??????? ?
I am devoted unto my Guru and am ever a sacrifice unto him.
???? ? ????? ??? ???? ??? ??? ???? ???? ??? ???? ?
My Master grant me this gift that I may not forget Thy Name even for a moment and trice. Pause.
????? ??? ??? ?? ???? ??? ??? ????? ?
Truly wealthy is he alone, who has God's wealth in his heart.
?? ???? ??? ??? ?? ???? ??? ???? ??????? ???
He alone is redeemed from the great noose, who, within his mind, has the Guru. word.
??? ?? ????? ??? ??? ???? ????? ?? ??? ?
What praise of the Guru should I describe? The Guru is ocean of Divine Knowledge and truthfulness.
??? ??? ?????? ???? ???? ???? ??????? ???
In prime and beginning of ages and all the ages through, He is the Perfect Lord.
???? ?????? ?? ??? ??? ??? ??? ???? ?
With Lord God's love in my mind, ever, ever I contemplate over the Name.
??? ????? ??? ???? ?? ???? ?? ???? ?????????
The Guru is Nanak's soul, life and wealth, and He is ever with him.

The life of the Gurus is ideal for a Sikh to follow, All the Gurus had the same divine light went on transferring to the successive Guru, at last Guru Gobind Singh said to the holy now it was the time to proceed in the eternity, the follower Sikhs asked who would be their Guru hereafter, Guru Gobind Singh said hereafter there would be no living Guru, but I will give you such a Guru who would never get tired giving you the preaches/teachings and declared scripture of the holy book of Sikhism, Guru Granth Sahib our Guru, from that the follower Sikhs started giving the scripture the honor like living Guru.
???? ???? ???? ?? ???? ???? ???? ??????? ???? ? Gurbani is the embodiment of the Guru and the Guru is the embodiment of Gurbani. In the whole of Gurbani is contained the Nectar.
???? ???? ??? ????? ??? ???? ????? ???? ??????? ??? If the attendant acts up to what Gurbani enjoys, the Guru in person(verily) saves him.{{{Guru Raam Daas Ji, Raag Nat Naaraayan 982}}}

Not only scripture is Guru but who so ever lets the people know the message of true Guru, becomes Guru at the moment.
???? ???? ??? ?? ???? ???? ??? ?? ??? ?
The Master of the meek and the Donor of the beings is obtained through the Perfect Guru.

???? ???? ???? ???? ?? ??? ??? ?????? ???? ? Guru's Sikh and Sikh's Guru, are one and the same and both propagate Guru's mission. ??? ??? ???? ????? ???? ???? ????? ????? ??????? The spell of the Lord's Name, the Guru enshrines in the Sikh's mind, O Nanak and he easily meets the Lord.
{{{Guru Raam Daas Ji, Raag Aasaa 444}}}

SO DEAR ASKER THOUGH NOT IN PHYSICAL BODY, GURU IS STILL THERE BUT AH RARES HAVE THE SIGHT TO SEE.

Yes , sister go with Jagjit S answer . He has covered main points .

Briefly speaking , Guru Gobind Singh Sahib gave guru ship to Guru Granth Sahib ( word of Gurus / word of God ) because the word is actually the Guru . It was mentioned by previous Gurus also that the word ( bani ) they are uttering is directly a revelation from God .
