Default Question on sikhism (covering hair when reading and reciting)?

When reading or reciting Sikh scriptures, is it right for the non-Sikh to cover the hair on the head? or is that only necessary when entering the Gurudwara (temple)? Also if I need to cover my hair, would a hooded sweater be sufficient?

HI !

Sikhism expects both genders to cover their head always , as that is the graceful and modest way .
You have to at least cover your head with a clean scarf or handkerchief when reading Sikh scriptures or involving in any of Sikh services . A Muslim can keep his skullcap also while in Sikh premises .

The reason Sikhs cover their heads while reading and reciting the holy scripture is to show humility to God. It's a way to show that the Sikh is not arrogant and stuck up, they respect what God has given them and it's okay if its a hooded sweater, but try to wear a clean handkerchief. And that is one of the reasons Sikh men wear turbans all the time, because God is ever prevailing and women cover their heads with a scarf. =)

If Sikhs recite Sikh scriptures at home, they will cover their hairs out of respect. God is everywhere not only in Gurdwara and Sikh scriptures contain praise of God. Gurdwara is an institution of Sikhism, where Sikh spirituality is taught. For non Sikhs, it is not compulsory. Still if you want to cover your hairs, you can cover with hooded sweater, Guru and God are great and will remain great. It is born out of respect.
