Once you begin to describe the Tao, you no longer describe the Tao. The Eternal Tao cannot be named.
It is a religion that teaches to live life simply, without material goods or material wealth; balance and harmony is key. One of my favorite sayings that reflect an idea of Taoism is:
Wealth isn't measured by how much you have, but measured by how little you need. In other words, when you have air, water, shelter, food, friends and family, you are truly wealthy.

EDIT: Alan Watts was brilliant. He was able to convey the idea of Taoism to the Western mind, and his book "What is Taoism" is very short and a quick read, much like the Tao Te Ching.
