It is possible, and common, to be a Buddhist and a Taoist and a Confucianist.

The answer to your 1st comparison is that Taoism teaches to go with the flow, and Confucians teach you to obey, so they go hand in hand. Taoism is also into equality, I believe, so it disagrees on that front with Conf....

Taoism is "the way" through life on the basic level and "the way" through the universe on the meta-physical level (if you really want to go there). Lao Tsu (old man) wrote it in three days before he entered Tibet and was never heard of again. The gatekeeper would not allow Lao Tsu to pass until he wrote the Te Tao Ching - or so the story goes.
