Yes, absolutely correct, you can't learn much from books... ^_^...
Meditating is not complicated, in fact it's best if you don't worry about the technique and just DO it. If you've read the Tao Te Ching, then you'll have read how Lao Tzu often said that stillness was a virtue, and how when people cease desires they will be calm and content. That's what meditation is for - it helps still the mind, so that you can be like Tao.
Just count your breaths. Sit comfortably, but not so comfortably that you fall asleep. Just breathe in, breathe out, breathe in, and breathe out, counting exhalations. Inhale, one....... inhale, two.......... inhale, three... once you reach ten, start over at one. If you lose count, which you certainly will (trust me ^_^), just go right back to one.
You'll find it's very difficult ^_^. Thoughts tend to jump in and distract you. It can take months, years before one becomes proficient at it. The key is simply not to worry about practice. Just keep coming back to it, just keep at it, don't think about how well you are doing or not doing. If you feel your meditation went well, don't compliment yourself. If you feel it went miserably, just go on as if nothing occurred.
You might want to look into Zen as well, Taoism and Zen have a lot in common.
