It represents the concept that characteristics otherwise seen as opposites (light/dark, firm/yielding, high/low, earth/water, male/female) are, in fact balanced in nature. And that this balance is necessary in people as well.

It also represents the idea that no matter how completely something appears to be one of these, there is always a bit of the opposite contained within.
