Default Why do so many Christian Physicists eventually leave Christianity for Zen, and Taoism

actually has quite a few examples of scientists who found Zen, and Taoism to be far more practical and logical than Christianity.

Are Christians generally illogical people?

Tao and Zen thrive amongst scientists and intellectuals because of their vagueness and humility.

Those faiths acknowledge that WE DON'T KNOW EVERYTHING, just as most rational people would concede.

Christianity assumes that we DO know everything (Bible).

Christianity, and indeed ALL dogmatic faiths, are very intellectually dishonest. That's why.

I think it's probably the result of most physicists of that generation being from a Christian background, so they'd be more likely to be Christian in the first place. To be honest, I'm rather surprised they started with any religious beliefs at all.

Jesus' teachings hold most of the same truths as does Zen which is a combination of Buddhism and Toaism. But he does it through the personal connection in our creator rather than via "mind."
The reason should then be obvious.

Because as Bongo said, Christianity is quite incompatible with psychological and intellectual maturity. Christians tend to be immature people that suffer from low self-esteem who want a parental figure (god as "father"), who want to believe in magic ("miracles" and "divine intervention", etc) and who want simple explanations they can understand ("god created the world in 6 days and rested on the 7Th", etc).
.
Also, there's nothing like reality! *grin* I don't know about Taoism, but I can tell you as a zen practitioner of nearly 20 years, zen is all about REALITY - accepting it, embracing it, and keeping it always "right in front of your face" and your mind. I would think it would be very hard for a scientist, a physicist, who knows the reality of how things actually work to believe in such foolishness as "miracles" and "divine intervention" etc.
.
In my experience Christians are indeed very illogical people- and not only that, but people who actively *choose* ignorance in the face of facts. Sadly, in it's least harmful form this is immaturity, and in it's most harmful form is mental illness.
