Two completely different religions having their origins in different places. Buddhism tries to end the cycle of life, death and rebirth by eliminating the desire to "stand still and emotionally cling to things". It is a development primarily from Hinduism. Taoism tires to find and live by the rules of nature and in Harmony with then. It studies the nature of reality in it's primordial context and developed techniques to teach the adept to obtain this primordial nature.
Chan Buddhism, often called Chinese Buddhism (Called Zen when it was taken to Japan) was greatly influenced by Taoism just as the Prue-existing religions influenced Buddhism wherever it was implanted.
