The Indian warrior monk Bodhidharma brought Indian Yoga and martial arts to the Shaolin Temple where it was merged with Taoist internal alchemy methods and became known as Ch'an. The origin of Ch'an was Dhyan and it eventually became known as Zen when it got to Japan.
So Ch'an is the meeting of Tao as a personal cultivation path to attain the ultimate convergence in oneself and the intrinsic Buddha-nature is the attainment, which means that Zen and Tao are one and the same, but many sects and off-shoot practices have sprung up from this since the Bodhidharma left his body, so it appears that there are differences.
