Define real? There are many things in this world that people do not define as "real" but still happen. This could be one of them. I wouldn't try it just to be safe.

Just like any faith, if you truly believe it to be real, then it can be so very real. It's all about the power of the mind. Voodoo actually prays on this fact, fear is the hardest emotion to shake so some people can be very susceptible to it.

Voodoo is real. It is extension of the same supernatural powers that demons possess. It is nothing to mess with or glamorize. It cripples the user and the victim. It is much like war, there is no winner. And much like the Satan himself, unreliable.
Vodou is an African Traditional Religion (ATR). It origins come from various African tribes. It is a religion practiced in many countries. The most commonly know is Haiti. Vodou is also practiced in the United States, various parts of the Caribbean and in Africa.
In Vodou we honor our ancestors, work with Law (the same as saints), and praise Bondye (God). Many think is is bad and evil. It a very beautiful religion that focuses on community, family, and togetherness. We believe in one God. The Law are the intermediaries that are here to help us because God is busy maintaining the universe.
Voodoo dolls are not part of the Vodou religion at all. They were called as such because they became popular in New Orleans as a form of Hoodoo magic. In witchcraft it is called sympathetic magic.
Unless you know how to use sympathetic magic I would suggest leaving them alone. Research witchcraft or hoodoo if you really want to learn how to use the dolls.
