Wicca has to do with white magic which is considered Good magic and i believe Wiccans do not believe in hurting others......Voodoo is black magic...and alto of black magic believes in bad stuff....but dint take my word for it.
Wicca was created in the 1950s by Gerald Gardner. It's a mystery religion, based on Prue-Christian faiths, generally Celtic or European. Lots of reverence for nature.
Voodoo, ad museum spellings, is basically a revival of African spirituality in the Caribbean. It also involves spells, but focuses more on the spirit world.
There are many misconceptions about both, and there are some similarities, however they are distinctly different in formation. Wicca is based on a coven structure, while Voodoo is individual, once learned. They also often focus their efforts on different matters. Both are revivalist, though.
Edit: Yes, Gardner did create Wicca. Wicca is not a centuries old religion, it is at best a revival movement. There are some similarities, but it is safe to say that modern Wicca is only a remnant of what may or may not have been truly practiced before the introduction of Christianity. Since there was no line of continuity, Gardner made up a lot of what HE thought the Celtic Pagan religions were like. Unfortunately the best information available was the early Roman and later Christian monks' descriptions of the indigenous religions. And there may have been some plagiarism from the Golden Dawn.
Completely different religions. Different beliefs, different mythology, different crafts....
PS Katrina... there is no such things a white or black magic. Wiccans who are corrupt can practice evil magic as well, and Voodoo certainly isn't destructive like you make it out to be
Really the only similarities is the belief in multiple gods and use of Magick in rituals and everyday life. It would be too hard to list everything but perhaps you should ask for the beliefs of each religion and make the comparison. I don't know enough about Voodoo.
Ethics, interpretation, and how practitioners interact with the Deities.
Voodoo's origins are African, while Wicca is more Northern European/Celtic.
There are a number of points of similarity between Roman Catholicism and Vodun (Wiccan beliefs in parenthesis):
* Both believe in a supreme being. (Wicca: God and Goddess)
* The Loa resemble Christian Saints, in that they were once people who led exceptional lives, and are usually given a single responsibility or special attribute. (Wicca: no real corollary)
* Both believe in an afterlife. (Wicca: general belief in reincarnation)
* Both have, as the centerpiece of some of their ceremonies, a ritual sacrifice and consumption of flesh and blood. (Wicca: cakes and ale. Ritual sacrifice of animals is not done)
* Both believe in the existence of invisible evil spirits or demons. (Wicca: does not generally believe in "evil" spirits or demons)
* Followers of Vodun believe that each person has a met Tet (master of the head) which corresponds to a Christian's patron saint. (Wicca: practitioners may have a Patron God and/or Matron Goddess)
Voudoo or Vodun is Franco-Afro-Caribbean adaptations of Yoruba Orisha-worship and its use of sympathetic and contagious magic and is usually combined with Christian rituals and images. Vodoo is related to Brazilian Santuario and Hispanic-Carribbean Santeria
Wicca is a modern revival of Pre-Christian(mostly European) nature worship and could include the giving of homage to the Great Mother/Horned God, the using of spells( White Magic),perhaps polytheism, perhaps membership in ritual and spiritual fellowships among other things.
Well, I know that both are ancient, earth-based religions; I believe one difference comes in where they each originated and certain beliefs. Wicca is referred to as pagan by some of its practitioners, but it has been around as a popular religion very long, according to wiped.DOAWicca originated in various countries in Europe, but had no structure.
Voodoo originated in Africa, and was exported to the Caribbean Islands and South America. There are many different names/variations of voodoo. Wicca does not have multiple gods/goddesses in its belief structure, as voodoo does. Also, Wicca does not believe in doing evil or revenge spells. In areas of Haiti, though, the dark side of voodoo is practiced by some and much feared by others. I believe voodoo has been around as a definite religion/practice much longer than Wicca has.
Actually, they are quite similar. Voduin is the oldest as the Afrtican people are the oldest race. Voodoo is based upon earth science, very in depth and so is Wicca. Both wisdom's can be used for the same purposes; for the good or for the harmful. By the way, Tawaen, Gardner DID NOT create, invent Wicca. He established his own faction of a very old and natural religion
