The concept of zombies was made dark and scary by sensational journalism and Hollywood. So, no the idea of zombies that most people have is not real.
Traditionally, if there were an issue in an African-based culture, the parties involved would try to work it out themselves first. If this were unsuccessful, the issue would eventually be taken to the elders. If the issue still could not be resolved through the traditional means, it may be taken to another group of people who work on what we might consider to be the darker side of spiritual energy. If the party in question is found guilty of the crime, a punishment can be meted out if he/she does not rectify the situation in a satisfactory manner within a specified time frame; or, if the person is a repeat offender for similar situations, the punishment may be meted out immediately.
One of those forms of punishment has come to be known as modification. This, as I understand it, is accomplished through the use of certain herbs and it can render the mind of the person essentially useless. It generally is not a permanent condition, from what I have been told.
