Voodoo is a religion. You can't "do Voodoo"

I would never mess with voodoo, Ouija board is more interesting and can be fun, if you use the right precautions. Voodoo scares me because of The Skeleton Key movie I watched with Kate Hudson in in :/ Creepy..

Voodoo from Africa, and Halloween from Europe, are not connected in any way.

The first answer is correct, Voodoo is a spiritual belief from West Africa. You can not "do" it. It's not witchcraft.

In modern times people have tried to say the feast day of the Voodoo/Congo spirit, Gh?d?, is November 1st (All Saints Day). This spirit is the popular skeleton figure often portrayed in Voodoo (He is the guardian of the gates to the cemetery and arbitrator between life and death.) By claiming this, one can claim Halloween is the eve of Gh?d?'s day and still be a child for Halloween while pretending to be grown up and taking yourself seriously. In fact, Voodoo is neither a written practice, nor does it have a calendar. The closest you could come to that is that the Gh?d? spirit is recognized as St. Expedite as his Catholic counterpart. St. Expedite's feast day is April 19Th, hardly even close to Halloween.

Some others try to celebrate a Voodoo "Day of the Dead" on November 1st. This is actually a Socratic practice associated with Catholic practices. November 1st is All Saints Day, November 2ND is All Souls Day. Technically, they should be doing this on November 2ND then. But, either way there is no connection to Halloween.

In Voodoo one petitions the spirits (the word Voodoo means spirits) and submits to them. There is no magic, spells, or hexes. That is the work of witchdoctors who are outcasts and contrary to Voodoo. Hoodoo is a superstitious belief that deals in potions and spells but does not recognize the spirits. That is why Hoodoo is different from Voodoo.

As for your buddy, I think he should just out and a have a great fun time on Halloween and not worry about casting spells. Then, on All Saints Day he needs to visit the cemeteries, as we do in New Orleans, to pray for the souls of the deceased and use the time to repair and maintain ones family tombs and grave sites. (It's the same logic as Mardi Gras and Ash Wednesday and Lent.)

P.S. By the way, did you know that it was on All Saints Day (November 1st) that the NFL awarded New Orleans a professional football team franchise and that's why they are called the Saints?
