Default What do you think of African Voodoo religious followers embracing Christianity?

I am not trying to promote Christianity or even say that Christianity is absolutely true. But what i have seen when i visited African countries made me ask you this question.

Female genital mutilation, child marriages, polygamy , Circumcision of boys , scraping the body with a knife for a bit of blood in order to perform voodoo ceremonies, and drinking the saliva of another voodoo practitioner is a very common thing i have seen. But these people when they embrace Christianity give up these unhygienic, dangerous and primitive customs.

Once again i am not saying that Christianity is the right religion for Africans or that Christianity is even the right one with absolute truths.

But what i am asking is when it comes to embracing Christianity , could it be a move in the right direction for them?

It will most probably result in some mixed religion, Christianity with witch hunting or something of that sort, they will think they have three Gods, and the main god was a white guy with blue eyes and Blondie hair, demons and diseases can be cast out etc.

Islam on the other hand would not allow this to happen.

Whats needed in Africa is education, and transmission of knowledge from parent to child. We take knowledge of basic things like hygiene for granted, how diseases are spread for example, schooling to grade 4 would help many poverty stricken people, to see the world in a new light.

EKET, Nigeria ? The nine-year-old boy lay on a bloodstained hospital sheet crawling with ants, staring blindly at the wall.

His family pastor had accused him of being a witch, and his father then tried to force acid down his throat as an exorcism. It spilled as he struggled, burning away his face and eyes. The emaciated boy barely had strength left to whisper the name of the church that had denounced him ? Mount Zion Lighthouse.

Yeah, see Uganda, Christian utopia! And start persecuting gay people and raping babies so they don't get HIV because they can't use condoms. Christianity has done nothing but bring death & destruction to Africa...not that other religions would have been any better. Missionaries should be imprisoned.

eta: Oh yes, the which burnings, I forgot for 5 seconds. Thousands of children and elderly burned to death because the Bible tells them so. Doesn't it make you proud?

Many have proved that they are in the right direction by choosing Christianity!

Whatever little light is there in the continent, is because of Christian missionaries!

While you say Christianity is not the right religion - you want to be fashionable and avoid the ire of Atheist TROLLs, right?

Stand up for truth - atheism does not have answers - only foul mouthing and abuse they have!

Jesus is clearly the way, He cuts across all cultures and changes lives completely. You can not meet Jesus and remain the same. This is happening all over the world.

lots of Christian missionaries bring with them many modern conveniences of the western world to "primitive" Africans...
it is pretty logical to go and try to be like the guys who have better stuff, then probably I'll have better stuff...
and because pagan religions are very flexible many Africans embrace Christianity along side with local African tradition and not as a replacement. you can also see it is the time of slavery in the USA, were African slaves combined there own tradition to feat to the boundaries of realign.
but they didn't invent that, saint Patric did the same in Ireland between the Celtic traditions and Christianity. and that was the same reason many Celtic Irish became Christians, it taught them new technological innovations, gave them a written language, and many other modern conveniences.
it's pretty well the same every were Christianity gets, it's not only a new religious message it brings, also the advantages of the western world.

Any move away from such barbaric practices is a move in the right direction, but I would prefer a real education for these people.

you are so correct, it is a move in the right direction. If this type of behavior can be seen in those practicing voodoo, can you imagine what the message of Christianity can have on the rest of the world. If we can get the truth out to as many as we can reach, and they accept Jesus as Lord, then a difference has been made in that person's life, true we can't reach everyone, some peoples hearts are hardened, the Bible even says so, but we keep trying. I'm glad that you are seeing the difference believing in Jesus can make, I hope you have a great day. Rachel
