Vodun is an interesting mix of African beliefs and Haitian superstitions. Lots of experts think that Vodun started in Africa. They believe that it goes back thousands of years ago. It's really hard to prove that, though. Lots of people believe it started during the slave trading years. Slaves were taken from Africa to many places, including Haiti. Some speculate that it was used as a means of self defense to intimidate superstitious slave owners. When they went to Haiti, the slaves took their belief system with them. There, it became more of a structured religion. Then, as people traveled between Haiti and Africa, they took the religion back to Africa. They also took it to the United States of America where, in New Orleans, Louisiana, it really began to grow. Sadly, during the colonial times, people were killed for practicing Vodun. How Voodoo Dolls became known as a method of cursing an individual by some followers of what has come to be called New Orleans Voodoo, which is a local variant of hoodoo, is a mystery.
These days many people believe that Vodun is constantly changing and evolving. It has an assortment of beliefs and practices from other religions incorporated into it. The practice of sticking pins in dolls has history in European folk magic, but its exact origins are unclear. This practice is not unique to New Orleans voodoo, however, and has as much basis in European-based magical devices such as the poppet and the Nikos or Boycie of West and Central Africa.
Vodun's basic belief is that every thing has holy significance. Everything has a soul and spirit. That's called Animism. They believe that the bones of dead people have magical powers. The bones of the noble people are especially powerful. They believe that one God exist. They call this god Olorun. There's a not-so-powerful god that comes with him named Obatala. Obatala's job is to create the earth and life. They also believe in loads of other spirits who are collectively called Loa. If you want to know the spirits, then ask. Voduns practice human and animal sacrifices. They have really torturous rituals that they perform. Heard of zombies? Well, you're smack inside the religion that says they exist. A zombie is the result of evil Vodun magic. It's the belief that after death someone can be brought back to life. They're totally under control of the person that brought him 'em back.
I hope that you've at least seen a Voodoo Doll. Voduns use them too, now and then. A Voodoo Doll is a doll that has been connected spiritually with someone you want to hurt. They make the connection, stick a pin in them, and cause all kinds of trouble. Prior to hurricane Katrina, about fifteen percent of the population in New Orleans practiced Voodoo.
