Yes it is real, certainer people with certainer skills if done right and with truth of heart can place a curse on you. Of course when you curse someone it comes back to you 100 fold.
Voodoo is a religion, or, more strictly speaking, a collection of religions.
Is it real? It's just as real as Catholicism, Judaism, Buddhism, or any other religion.
Is it bad / scary? Some people are afraid of voodoo because of the Hollywood tales, and because it's mostly Black people doing it. However, like any other religion, it can be used for good or bad, and there are good people as well as bad people practicing it.
Personally, I'm a lot more afraid of certain evangelical Christians, as they're interested in overthrowing our constitutional republic and creating a biblical theocracy on US soil. Real voodoo people don't stick pins in dolls; that's just Hollywood. But certain evangelicals stick pins in maps, and that's real.
