I've been a Wicca for four months now and I need some rituals I can do without candles, because my parents don't want me to burn down the house. Its kinda hard not listening to my family make jokes about me. Help?
I don't think there is a ritual worth its salt that doesn't include candles. They are representation of fire, among other things and that's necessary in almost every circumstance; I'm pretty certain that if you've been Wiccan for four months now (with an additional year and a day of research prior to becoming Wiccan) that you would have that knowledge already.
If you can't use candles, you can simply pray, meditate and visualize in order to strengthen your connection to the Gods and Goddesses. Rituals are very complex.
You don't need any candles or even any tools at all for rituals. If you feel comfortable with them (like I do) then you can use them. But really, the true power is in yourself. The tools are optional.
It all depends on what your goal is. For a beginner I'd suggest simple protection rites, or something of the sort. I've found that rituals written yourself are more effective; if you need a basic outline of what's in a ritual, I'd recommend "21st Century Wicca" and Scott Cunningham's basic guide to being a solitary Wiccan. Or join Witchschool.com, which is where I first started learning. There are a lot of great people with good experience.
By the way, don't be hurt by what your family says. I was born and raised in a Catholic family, and half of my family lives in the South, so I really know what it's like to be made out a "sinner" and weirdo for my beliefs. Stay strong and keep your chin up. Someday, we'll be respected.
Along with what Your name here says, you can go on everythingunderthemoon.net/forum (I'm Ravencry there), Reikihealer83 posts many spells that require nothing but your mind. I also posts spells that don't require much but some dirt, or salt, or herbs. Blessed be!
(We'll also answer your questions without having people thump the Bible in your face )
You need more study if you think you **need** items in order to practice Wicca. "Things" are not the main focus of the religion. Rituals are only created with "tools" as aids. They're not mandatory. If you want to conduct a ritual without candles, then go ahead. You don't **need** anything but yourself. Alter the ritual and adapt it to suit YOUR needs.
As has been said before, you don't *need* candles, but you could replace the candles with visualization as others stated, and if you want to replace the Elemental candles, use other items such as a rock or crystal for Earth, seashell for Water, feather for Air and if you have a representation of a dragon or phoenix you could use it for fire.
Around this time of the year, stores often have those "electric candles", like candle holders with a light bulb. If you really think you need a candle to represent things, you can use that. (I need to go into the garage and find mine. I know its there!) They look like this:
If you can't buy one of those (or find one around the house), you can just visualize a candle. Sometimes, visualization is better than actually having a candle. I know when I perform a spell and I don't feel like lighting a candle (or I don't have my candle lighter, like the one my mom stole from me a month ago), I'll just visualize the candle and what color it is.
You don't "need" the tools like candles and such, but they are helpful. I've learned to adapt, because I'm a broke community college student OTL.
If you are just starting out on your exploration of Wicca then perhaps jumping straight into doing rituals is not the best option for now.
While many people have already said that tools are not 100% necessary, they are quite important in the beginning. So is understanding their use, symbolism and the reason why they are important in some instances.
My recommendation for you would therefore be to rather start working on your first book of shadows and start with the very basics, such as the elements. An example of this might be sitting an meditating on the element of Air - what does it symbolize to you? what co lours do you feel are associated with it? what other items can you think of that could represent it to you (egg. feathers)? Then go and look up everything you can find on this element from some *good* sources. You could then move on to Fire and perhaps you will find another item you could use to symbolize it. One which has deeper meaning to you than a candle.
When you do get to the point of doing rituals with candles, and you still have problem with family or other people you live with, then perhaps think about using the bathroom or another room which is tiled (and thus a lot less flam able).
