Not technically. The God and Goddess are an integral part of Wiccan belief.
But in the modern world, there are as many variations of every religion as there are people who practice them. So someone could call them self Wiccan and be an atheist. But "old school" Wiccans would say that isn't Wiccan.
Nope. Wicca is a religion. Remove the religion and what you have left is a craft. Witchcraft, and as I am sure many of the witches on here will explain that what they practice is not Wicca.
Being as Wicca is a theistic religion...no. Some of us may have different deity concepts, but there is definitely a belief in Divinity in some form.
Now as to whether or not an atheist can be a witch that's a different question and I'd say "yes". Simply because just because an atheist doesn't believe in a deity does not mean that they don't believe in anything else beyond the physical.
How did I get thumbed down for that? I'm Wiccan so I think I can speak about that and I have known some who have professed to being atheist yet have used witchcraft. Someone may not have liked that, but sorry, it's true.
In my mind, no. There are some people who identify themselves as such, but what they generally mean is they work magic without dealing with gods...which just isn't what Wicca is about.
Wicca is a religion. Wicca is about our relationship with our gods. If you're not interested in the gods, that's fine, but it's not Wicca. It's something else, something that doesn't revolve around a relationship with the divine.
Spirituality is at its best when there is no name for it. In other words, you don't need a name for your beliefs, just as long as you know what you believe.
It's possible to be a Wiccan who is technically an atheist- if you believe that the gods exist, but they aren't gods, instead some human-created energy. In short, as I said, that the gods exist, but they aren't gods.
It's not my cup of tea, but do as you will.
However, without any gods at all the liturgy makes no sense at all, and then why would you call yourself Wiccan...what would you be doing that was Wicca?
Wiccan Atheism is not a sound path, this is because Wiccan's believe in the Gods. As per Theist's, the dictionary defines them as a person or people who denies or disbelieves the existence of a supreme being or beings. Feel free to check any other dictionaries you like, they will all say the same or something similar.
Now a person or individual may be a Atheist Witch. Here no belief in deity is necessary to practice. Witch is an old word and crosses over every nation and peoples of our world. Though the name may be different depending upon nationality, it doesn't change the meaning. So an Atheistic Witch is feasible, as well as possible.
Yes it is indeed possible for a Wicca to be technically an atheist. I myself am one and so are many of my Wicca friends. It all boils down to ones definition of deity.
Some vicunas believe that the gods are actual beings. Some believe that the gods are pure forms of energy. My friends and I generally believe that the gods are very powerful archetypes that our unconscious self's find useful and sometimes necessary. As such we consciously honor and develop relationships with those archetypes and often use them to speak to our unconscious self in its own symbolic language. Archetypes are very powerful and useful aids whose main purpose is to keep the unconscious and conscious self's working as a healthy and united team.
While as you can see from many of the other responses, god purists who think deity must be a literal being claim such a thing is impossible, the more correct response would be that personally they find it impossible. In reality many others find it neither impossible nor improbable and as there is no dogmatic definition of who or what deity is or should be in Wicca belief, we have every right to call ourselves Wicca.
No. It just does not make any sense. Wicca has always had Gods.
Like LabGrrl said, some believe that the Gods are simply manifestations of the human mind. But even then I would not call them atheists. Just because they were not "born" Gods does not make them any less. Many people have different ideas as to how the Gods came into being or how they interact with us, but the common theme is that they are Gods. I personally do not feel that the Gods created our world, rather they manifested from the whole just as we did. But they are still Gods. More advanced than us, if you will.
