Wiccans- I would like to become Wicca, but I'm not sure how to start?
I've LentNT lot about it over the past month or so, and I would like to learn more. However I've heard there are a lot of unreliable, commercialised websites and books about it out there, and I would like to know what ones you recommend. if you have any tips, or know things that I should do please tell. I want to do this properly.
ps. Please no Christians telling me to convert. I am not a fan of Christianity, and am currently atheist.
I think there are some books or something on this sort of thing, but most of them are focused on selling Wicca as a hip new trend instead of talking about the actual religion
dint be atheist!! that means you believe in nothing!! you must be live to become a Wicca or pagan
its all about deep spiritual connections with the earth, there is no higher being only higher power, but it is much more than just a human. Pagans be live in equality of all beings including animals, YES WE BELIVE THEY HAVE A SOUL equal to a Hyman's of course. you will find many pagans are very natural people, and can truly see the earth.
science does not contradict our religion. unlike Christianity.
Go to your library and check the religion and spirituality section. Read as much as possible and come to your own conclusions. Steer clear of any books that have flashy covers and look like they're targeting teenagers. Most people here are either not tolerant of other religions, or think Wicca is about drinking blood and worshiping the devil...take what they say with a grain of salt.
there are many things that have to do with Wicca, there's a very cool website for holidays that i posted for u in my sources...
before you become a Wicca you must go through your year and a day which is a ritual you do before you become a full Wicca, you just practice Wicca for a year and a day
i haven't even told you the best part, all the gods and goddesses pretty much exist, and dragons and faeries and everything you could imagine is real!! you call upon some of these creatures to protect your circle... its so awesome just look on Viki and maybe get some books from the book store that explain well what Wicca is .... blessed be!!!
Read, read, read, read and read. the greatest knowledge is from books. i would suggest sites like Wilcox.com and pagan.com. secondly read books by Scott Cunningham, Ellen dug an, Thur Calif, and l.j smith. during your studies you can try complete ling a self initiation ritual most vicunas like to preform. the task is simple, you just have to devote yourself for 1 year and 1 day. Blessed be.
First don't listen to the bible pushers. we don't think we can throw fireballs or use levitation. It is not supernatural.
Wicca is a nature based religion. We use herbs to make natural medicine. It focuses on two deities, the mother goddess and father god. we pray to them through rituals and spells. We believe all things in nature has a energy and spirit. We are like the priests in Christianity. We all can feel the god and goddess power through all nature. You can start at any time. if you are a solitary witch like me then all you have to do is meditate and practice till you can feel the energy around you. You can feel a link between you and the gods If you believe. You can do personalized spells like me. I do rituals the way I fell is right and because i put my soul and heart into it the god and goddess love me. We do not believe in the devil or hell. We believe in reincarnation. If you would like to know more you can email me at r.ordon@yahoo.com
May the god and goddess bless you forever. )O(

Yes, it's certainly true there are a lot folks giving out erroneous "information" -- First, you need to do a lot of study and research; then the very best way to go is to find a good, experienced, reputable High Priest/ess Teacher --
Here are some good sites for reliable info onWicca: RESOURCES FORWICCANS:
CoG - Covenant of the Goddess - http://www.cog.org CoG is a national organization of (legally-recognizedWiccan "churches) -Wiccan covens, clergy and solitaries -- with local "councils" in many cities. CoG provides general, basic information, links to resources and other organizations, Groups, Covens, teachers, High Priest(ess)es, and much more.
2. Circle Sanctuary - http://www.circlesanctuary.org Circle is a Pagan (not justWiccan) Sanctuary, working farm, and learning center. It offers training, workshops, festivals, networking, and sponsors other organizations
. 4. Witchvox - http://www.witchvox.com Witchvox is a wonderful resource that offers general, basic information, referrals and links to local and regional resources on Pagan Classes, Groups, Organizations, Merchants, and more.
5. Wicca For the Rest of Us - http://wicca.timerift.net/ - One of the better Pagan internet sites; lots of good information, articles, resources, links, networking, etc.
4. ?BeginningWicca? Yahoo Group - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BeginningWicca/ - One of the better Yahoo groups with several High Priests and Priestess members, so there are lots of good discussions and good information available in both the online discussions, and the Files section.
5. Religious Tolerance ? Pages onWicca: http://www.religioustolerance.org/witchcra.htm
B. BOOKS:
1. Books And Authors To Avoid: AVOID anything by:
Silver Ravenwolf , Douglas Monroe's "21 Lessons of Merlin", Kisma Stepanich, Edain McCoy Mary Summer Rain
2. On Scott Cunningham: A word on Scott Cunningham and his books, "Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner" and "LivingWicca": -- It's crucial to realize that Scott was advocating a NEW Kind ofWicca -- Until his publications,Wicca was a Mystery, Initiatory, Lineaged Path, whose deepest, most profound principles and practices were oath-bound and not available publically (they still are not, but most beginners don't realize that). Scott wrote his books for the many who were interested and he felt, deserved to have at least basic, essential information, even if they were not able to hope for finding a good teacher or Coven. HOWEVER -- and again, this is crucial: (many of us feel that) Scott never intended that his book(s) should REPLACE TraditionalWicca, or that those who COULD find good Covens and teachers, would avoid or neglect doing so, in favor of this "Solitary" and non-initiatoryWicca. It's really beyond the scope of this brief essay to discuss in any depth, the many reasons whyWicca is best (and was meant to be) properly taught by experienced High Priests/ Priestesses, and learned and practiced in a Coven --
But anyone who *avoids* being well-trained by a good, experienced and well-trained High Priest/ess, or practicing within a Coven, does themselves a huge DIS-service; they are extremely unlikely to experience some of the most important, central, powerful and beautiful aspects ofWicca.
3 . Good Book Resources OnWicca:
a. Ellen Cannon Reed's "The Heart ofWicca" --
http://www.amazon.com/Heart-Wicca-Wise-Words-Crone/dp/1578631742
NOTE: This is the very first and major book i would reccomend!
b. Starhawk's "The Spiral Dance",
c. Janet and Stewart Farrar's "The Witches Bible" -
d. Ray Buckland's "Buckland's Complete Book of Witchcraft" ?
e. Gerald Gardner's "Witchcraft Today" and "The Meaning of Witchcraft"
Of course there are many, many other good books, and new ones coming out all the time -- These are what might be considered "classics".
4. And finally, here are some articles on FInding Good Teachers: Finding Teachers & Mentors:
silver raven wolf is a pretty good Wicca author. i have her books To ride a silver broomstick, to stir a magi ck cauldron, to light a sacred flame, and teen witch. these should help. best of luck.
