because its a relatively new occurrence. The fad resurgence of such things only date back 50 or 60 years at most. Some argue Wicca comes from the 19Th century, but modern versions are only 40 or 50 years old.
Sometimes you meet whine Noe pagans. Some of us already know paganism is ancient. I just asserted that Wicca isn't all that old. Please don;t tell me you believe Wicca is ancient! (rolls eyes)
Well, you are certain to get a bunch of Christians jumping on this one, which may be an answer in itself. Much ignorance is due to having a different point of view (usually christian, but perhaps other "standard" religions as well) that prevents you from seeking real facts.
Secondly, the pagan mysteries have long protected themselves, hiding behind symbols, misdirection and so on, because of persecution. Remember the burning times! (i.e., the inquisition.) Also, I think many modern pagans, witches, Wicca, (use what term you will), believe that only a small percentage of people are capable of being a part of the pagan world: one might almost call it snobbery. Think of Malfoy and his contempt for anyone who is not born a "pure blood" witch or wizard. You think Rawlings pulled that out of pure imagination?
Then there are those who are simply not ready to tell all they know. (Where does AuntB93 fit in all this?)
They aren't necessarily. I am quite familiar with Wicca, Asatru, and some of the other religious paths that make up that loose aggregation of faiths that call themselves pagan. There is a ton of information on the Internet, provided by the practitioners of the religions themselves, so it is not difficult to find out what they believe, what the celebrations are, etc. Plus you can see the dynamics of these communities in Usenet and other discussion groups.
The reason I find them lacking as spiritual choices (for me) is based on what I do know about them, not what I don't.
the bible speaks against pagan religions and witchcraft. We are told to stay away from it. So, we dint go out of our way to read about it, find out more about it, try to under sand it, its evil..period.
First of all, Paganism, Witchcraft and witchcraft are not interchangeable terms. Secondly, witchcraft is not a religion and Witchcraft is viewed as one by only some of its practitioners. And just to confuse you even further - while Witchcraft is generally (although not universally) viewed as a Pagan practice, witchcraft can be either Pagan or not.
However, to actually answer your question I believe that those who are ignorant about these various religious, magical and religion-magickal practices are so because: 1) these things are not part of the mainstream, making awareness of their existence let alone access to reliable materials on the subject incredibly difficult; 2) popular culture fictionalizes these things in such a way that they barely resemble reality; and/or 3) they are too lazy or comfortable with their current point of view to bother with doing any research on the subject(s).
Of course, this statement is in no way intended to display bias; There are in fact many people who actually self-identify as Pagans, Witches, and/or witches who are also completely ignorant of the very same religious, magical and religion-magickal practices to which they claim.
