Hello Sara. You need to learn the herbs officially and what they do, how they're combined and what's appropriate for which treatment, etc.
That will be your main course of study.
Witchcraft is very specific. It's not the only thing that would designate "good luck, etc" so that would be a secondary aspect of your learning.
If you approach it this way you'll gain a wealth of knowledge that would be more reliable in nature.
Read the herbs books or better yet become qualified through courses.
Do no harm.
Hope this helps.
I wish you well.

I?m not really sure what you mean by "is there a middle path?"...but yes, I believe there is. You would simply need to read from a variety of references. For example, look up the scientifically-pr oven properties of the herbs (nowadays everything can be found on the Internet), while also looking up their uses in witchcraft.

Here you have a site on medical herbalism: http://www.medherb.com/, one on horology: http://www.crystalinks.com/herbology.html and one on Wicca herbalism: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/249748/green_witchcraft_guide_to_wiccan_herbalism.html

There are many traditional, cultural, ceremonial and medicinal uses for herbs. Worrying about whether or not someone else thinks it's "scientific" enough is more like "scientist" than anything else. Lavender has a calming effect when used in aromatherapy. Mint makes a great tea for upset stomachs and it's also an essential ingredient in making Mohitos... but it will take over your garden because it's very invasive. There are plenty of books available on herbs, horology, and lots of great websites:

If you are looking for a well-established science in herbal medicine, please look no further than Ayurvedic medicine. It has been part of the Indian culture for thousands of years and it has been gaining popularity in the west for the last fifty years.

The unique thing about Ayurvedic philosophy is that as well as helping to cure deceases it gives a systematic guide on how to live a happier, healthier and joyous life leading to prevention of deceases.

Ayurvedic medicine was once practiced all over the world but because of the collapse of world order 5000 years ago, a lot of the knowledge was lost. India is the last bastion of this great science unfortunately because of the strong influence of the west their philosophy and culture is slowly disappearing.

In the west you might see some of the knowledge past on through the so-called old wives tales etc that has been past on from generation to generation. Unfortunately, many of the techniques have been watered down or misunderstood.

Listed are a few books and links you might be interested in.
